Mary Jo Mathews Agner, a beloved matriarch, friend, and community member, peacefully passed away at her residence on February 6, 2026 at the age of 98. Born on June 15, 1927, in Tallassee, Alabama, she was the cherished daughter of the late Samuel Parker Mathews and Charlcie Elizabeth Duncan Mathews.
Known for her warm spirit and unwavering love for her family, Mary dedicated her life to nurturing those around her. She is survived by her devoted sons, Gerald F. Agner and Barry Joseph Agner and his wife Donna, along with her daughter, Pamela G. Wade. Her legacy continues through her adoring grandchildren, Scott, Shannon, Candace, Shannon Michelle and her husband Bill, and Joshua and his wife Beth, as well as her 11 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Each one of them was a source of immense pride and joy for Mary, as she reveled in sharing special moments and family gatherings with them.
Mary shared an especially close bond with her sister, June Papaspiros, who stood by her side through the years. She also leaves behind her brother, Richard "Rick" Mathews and his wife Francis, who will carry forward the treasured memories they created together.
Mary's love for games, particularly board games and card games, was well known in her family. Hours spent playing cards, often as a member of a Canasta group, solidified her enjoyment of both friendly competition and camaraderie. Her involvement with The Compassionate Friends allowed her to forge meaningful relationships that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.
Mary’s interests extended beyond games and companionship. She delighted in crocheting for her family and friends, cultivating her garden, and working with her flowers, which demonstrated her nurturing nature. A trip to the beach was never complete without her collecting seashells, an activity that captured her appreciation for nature’s beauty. Her culinary skills were exceptional as well, particularly her pound cakes and cornbread, recipes that will forever be cherished within her family.
In addition to her vibrant talents and passions, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Homer L. Agner, her son, Kerry Lynn Agner, grandson, Paul Pinkston, and six siblings. Each of these losses weighed heavily on her heart, yet she always radiated love and resilience, qualities that inspired so many.
As family and friends gather to celebrate her life, they will remember Mary Jo Agner not only for her unwavering love and devotion but for her ability to create happiness in the simplest of moments. A visitation will be held at Rowan Memorial Park in the mausoleum in Salisbury, NC, on February 13, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM and burial will immediately follow also at Rowan Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trellis Hospice, 101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
In honoring Mary's remarkable journey, let us celebrate her laughter, cherished memories, and the lasting impact she made on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
