Lydia Lewis was born on April 19, 1945, at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, to her beloved parents, Bertha and Daniel Lewis. She was one of twelve children in a large, close-knit family that taught her the value of love, hard work, and togetherness.
Lydia attended P.S. 100 and Mark Twain for middle school, later continuing her education at an all-girls high school. Over the years, she held many jobs working diligently at the airport, in a factory, as a school cook, and as a home health aide. She also lovingly cared for many of her nieces and nephews as a babysitter, always showing up for her family with open arms and a generous heart. She was a proud member of Naomi AME Zion Church, where she found joy, peace, and strength in her faith. She loved going to church and worshipping with her church family.
Her home was a cherished gathering place, especially during the holidays. Lydia was best known for her incredible cakes, the warmth of her presence, and her ability to bring people together in joy and celebration. She created a legacy of love that lives on in every member of her family.
Lydia was preceded in death by her mother and father, Bertha and Daniel Sr.; sisters, Ruby, Bertha, Emma, Earlean, and Vernell.
She leaves behind three sisters and three brothers, her twin sister Lillian, Francine, Dorothy, Joseph, Daniel Jr., and David. Lydia is also survived by her devoted daughter, Michele (Denise); son in law, Monroe; her loving granddaughters, Latonia, Monica, and Diamond; and grandson-in-law, JD. She was a proud great-grandmother to Tionna, Tanaisha, Janaisa, Tyrone, Allure, Sam, Delilah, Heaven, Jayla, and Jordyn; as well as her Godson, Neil Turner.
Lydia's circle of love extended beyond blood with her lifelong best friends Debbie and Florence who were also held close to her heart.
Lydia Lewis was the heart of her family, a woman whose strength, grace, and love shaped generations. Her spirit will live on.
