Kirsti Smith

November 23, 1943 — August 8, 2021

Kirsti A. Smith was called into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and entered Heaven on Sunday August 8, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born in Virrat, Finland on November 23, 1943, to Elmer and Ellie Asunmaa. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her eldest brother, Aatos Asunmaa of Canada. At the age of 16, she immigrated to the United States with her family. Kirsti accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 12 and was a fervent prayer warrior who displayed Love in Action (Romans 12:9-21). She was a very sweet, kind, humble, and gentle person; the world’s best sister, mom, mummi, and friend who cared deeply for those around her. Kirsti was a 32-year breast cancer survivor and was an excellent cook and baker, always fixing meals for celebrations and holidays. She was also known for her green thumb, growing, and caring for plants, especially her Christmas cactus. She was very resourceful, crafting and fixing all sorts of things. She was an avid collector of recipes and knick-knacks. In her career, she was an excellent and meticulous seamstress making custom draperies. In her retirement, she lived with her daughter, son-in-law, and cherished granddaughter, Emi. and she was mere minutes away from her son's home. Kirsti and Emi were truly two peas in a pod: cooking, baking, sewing, crafting, and most of all being silly and laughing together.

Survivors include her son, Michael Smith; daughter, Joelle Hinson and husband Scott; granddaughter, Emi Hinson; brothers, Juhani Asunmaa and wife Tellervo and family of Finland and Hannu Asunmaa and wife Irma and family of Finland; and sister, Kaarina Lehtonen and husband Yrio and family of Ohio.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. with the Celebration of Life Service starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday August 14, 2021, at Calvery Church, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Rd, Charlotte, NC 28226 with Pastor Sibu Rajappan officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Memorial Gardens, also at the church. The family requests that social distancing as well as facemasks be worn for protection to all.
