John William Cannon

March 15, 1945 — August 18, 2020

John William Cannon, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

Born in Conway, SC, he was the son of Eugene Hampton and Hazel Floyd Cannon. He moved to Murrells Inlet, SC with his family and grew up there.

John graduated from Winyah High School and attended Massey Junior College, Atlanta, GA, and Kings Business College, Charlotte, NC. In 1967 he joined the US Marine Corps where he proudly served at Marine Headquarters, Washington, DC; Okinawa, Japan; and Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC. John married his wife, Joye Dixon Cannon, in 1968 and after his service in the Marine Corps, they settled in Murrells Inlet until 1985, at which time they moved to Stanley, NC.

John was a 32-degree Mason and a member of Stanley Masonic Lodge. John had many interests and obtained certification in air conditioning/heating repair, outboard motor repair, and held a Ham Radio operator license. His most enjoyable hobby was woodworking and he was a craftsman. He remodeled two houses and inside finishing in their present home, including cabinetry. In addition to numerous shelves, cutting boards, and picture frames, John built over 30 pieces of furniture for family and friends.

John retired from ARP Manor, Gastonia, NC, and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Stanley, where after retirement he made repairs there and crafted several items from wood including a replica of Noah’s Ark, to scale.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joye Dixon Cannon; son, Trent Cannon and wife Lisa, from Alexis, NC; daughter, Anne Cannon Whitener and husband Josh, from Stanley, NC; grandchildren, Grant Whitener, Ashley Cannon, Savannah Cannon; sister, Linda Cannon Rowan and husband Terry, from Murrells Inlet, SC.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial service which will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. outdoors at First United Methodist Church on Common Ground, 4581 Hickory Grove Rd., Stanley, NC 28164 with Rev. Noel Sweezy officiating.  Due to the NC Covid-19 restrictions, masks and social distancing are recommended.  There is limited seating available but please bring your fold up outdoor lawn chairs.  In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Family Life Center.
