James Everett Winn, passed away on May 24, 2026, at Atrium Health in Shelby, North Carolina. Born on November 6, 1940, in Lowndes County, Mississippi, James lived a life rich in dedication, faith, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A long-distance truck driver by career, James spent countless miles on the road, embracing the journey with quiet determination and a steadfast spirit. Yet, beyond his professional life, he was deeply rooted in his community as a cherished member of Lakeside Church of God in Denver, NC. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, inspiring many and fostering a strong bond with his church family.
James was a man of many passions. His hands crafted beauty through woodworking, his patience and skill evident in each piece he lovingly created. When not shaping wood, he found solace and joy in fishing, hunting, and gardening—activities that connected him deeply to the natural world and allowed him to share treasured moments of peace and fulfillment.
A natural leader and a friend to many, James was the organizer of the men's breakfast clubs, gathering friends together to share fellowship, encouragement, and hearty conversation. These meetings were not just about the meals but about building and nurturing enduring friendships, a testament to his caring heart and generous spirit.
James’s legacy is profoundly reflected in the family he loved and cherished. He shared 48 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Martha Grizzle Winn, who stood by his side through life's many seasons. Together, they raised four children: Gary Winn, married to Deanna; Brent Cummings, married to April; Joshua Winn, married to Dana; and daughter Rachel Winn. The joy of their family extended to six grandchildren—Devon, married to Blayne; Tyler; Taylor; Skye; Ethan; and Lana—who brought immeasurable happiness and light to James's life.
He was also blessed with the companionship of his sister, Mary Winn Hays, a living thread to the family fabric. Though James's parents, James and Margie Anderson Winn, and his brother, James Harrison Winn, have passed on, their memories live strong in those who remember their legacy through him.
James Everett Winn’s journey on this earth was one of hard work, deep faith, and boundless love. He leaves behind a community enriched by his presence, a family inspired by his example, and friends comforted by his steadfastness.
As we remember James, we hold close the warmth of his smile, the kindness of his heart, and the strength of his spirit. His passing is a profound loss, but his life was a gift that will continue to inspire and guide all who were fortunate to know him. Rest peacefully, James, your journey has come home.
