James Robert "BoBo" Auten, a cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by the warmth of fond memories and lasting love. He was born on November 25, 1952, in Gaston County to the late Clyde and Helen Watts Auten.
James was a man whose heart was as vast as the ocean and whose spirit soared in the mountains. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially trips to the beach, where the calming waves mirrored his gentle soul. Camping in the mountains with his brother Terry brought him immense happiness, and he often reminisced about those moments filled with laughter and silence alike. His love for fishing was only rivaled by the joy it would bring him to spend time in nature, connecting with the world around him.
He leaves behind his son, James Auten. His beloved sisters, Susie Cook and her husband Gene, Sheila Shuler and her husband Joe, provided unwavering support and companionship throughout his life and his brother Terry Auten. He was also proud of his many nieces and nephews, including his special great-great niece, Emaleigh Jordan, whose bright energy brought a twinkle to his eye. He cherished his pet dog Buddy, whose loyalty and love brought him comfort and joy along with his caretaker niece, Becky Jordan and husband Robbie.
While James enjoyed laughter and connection with those around him, he also carried the weight of loss in his heart. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Cagle Auten, who was the light of his life, and their son gone too soon, Shannon Auten, his daughter Debra Auten and his three brothers—Tony, Timmy, and Dickie Auten—each of whom left a profound impact on his life.
As we gather to honor his life, a memorial service will be held at Benson Funeral & Cremation Services in Mt. Holly, NC, on May 20, 2025 at 4:00 PM with Rev. Scot Lee officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service beginning at 3:00.
