Iliana Carlos Reardon, 91, of Mount Holly passed away peacefully December 20, 2021 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. She was born on October 8, 1930 in Los Angeles, California to the late Robert L. Carlos and Guadalupe V.H. Carlos. She married the love of her life, Bernard, in 1965, raising a family with him and living in his native Ireland for over 50 years, before returning to the United States to live in North Carolina in 2016. In addition to the priceless gift of faith given by her to her children, she was known to family and friends alike as a sweet and funny lady who always had a song on her lips and a twinkle in her eye. She praised God in song as a member of her church choir both in California and in Ireland. A successful basketball player in high school, she enjoyed playing and watching tennis in later years (Wimbledon and the U.S. Open were her favorites). Her desire to help people was driven by her lifelong Christian faith and she was a great comfort and support to several friends who were suffering serious illnesses.
Her final illness of Alzheimer’s was borne patiently and with much humor and was an inspiration to her family and to all who encountered her. The family wishes to express their special appreciation and thanks to all the wonderful Home Instead caregivers (especially Michelle, Teresa, Gloria, Renee, Tamara, Williette, Abby, Kimberly, Candice, Chloe, Lisa and Jeanne) who loved and cared for her so much in her most vulnerable years. Thanks also to all who provided medical and therapeutic care to Iliana through the years, and to the staff at CaroMont Regional for their care of her in her last days. She is already greatly missed by her beloved and adoring family, who nevertheless live in the hope of her joyous resurrection and of their happy meeting one day in heaven.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years Bernard, her daughter Thérèse, her son Laurence, her brother Robert J. Carlos and wife Colette, her sister Greta Marie Carlos, her sister-in-law Grace Carlos, her 13 nephews and nieces and cousins (especially Oskar Von Heydenreich of Wichita, Kansas and the Corcoran Family of Cork, Ireland). She is preceded in death by her brother Hugo Carlos, sister Aurora (Rori) Carlos Mackenzie and husband Harvey Mackenzie, and nephew Robin Carlos.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (commencing with the Rosary at 10 a.m.) on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gastonia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. The Rite of Committal will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Belmont.
Please pray for the happy repose of Iliana’s soul in the loving arms of Our Lord and His Blessed Mother.
May He support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done! Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. (John Henry Cardinal Newman)
