Harry Neal Caldwell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and devoted member of his community, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, at his residence. Born on January 29, 1929, in Monroe, North Carolina, Harry’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, faith, and country.
A proud US Army veteran, Harry served honorably during the Korean Conflict as a tank commander. His commitment to service continued as a member of the Belmont American Legion #144, where he fostered camaraderie and support among veterans. Beyond his military service, Harry was a longtime and faithful member of Belmont Foursquare Church, where his spirit of fellowship and faith touched many.
Harry’s love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of the mountains and the beach, places where he found solace and joy. Known affectionately as a Belmont Red Raider fan, he rooted passionately for his team. Gardening was another passion close to his heart, especially nurturing his tomato plants, the fruits of which were delicately savored in his favorite tomato sandwiches. One of Harry’s greatest joys in life was sharing picnics and special moments surrounded by his beloved family.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Rhonda Caldwell Eldridge Cagle and her husband Gary “Steve,” and George Thomas Caldwell. His close nephew, Doug Gladden, and wife Margaret, shared many treasured times with Harry, particularly at the bowling alley, alongside numerous other nieces and nephews. Harry’s legacy lives on vibrantly through his grandchildren, Denise Eldridge Mullis and husband Dan, Jerri Johnson and husband Dink, and Jenny Dowdle and husband Mike. His great-grandchildren—Andrew Mullis, Hannah Mullis, Caitlynn Johnson and husband Brandon, Aaron Johnson, C.J. Wall, and Rebecca Shae (Elisha)—carry forward his memory filled with love and warmth.
Harry was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Carolyn Lowe Caldwell; his son Barry Caldwell; his brother Don Caldwell; his sisters Leona Ingle and Georgia Sue Woodward; his infant sister Lucille Caldwell; and his son-in-law Butch Eldridge, all of whom he holds dear in eternal remembrance.
A Funeral Service honoring Harry’s life will be held on April 4, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kevin Ford officiating at Benson Funeral & Cremation located at 101 Oak Grove Street, Mt. Holly, North Carolina. Visitation will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery in Mt. Holly with military honors.
Those who knew Harry Neal Caldwell remember him as a man of integrity, kindness, and steadfast devotion—a pillar of strength, love, and joyful spirit whose legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
