Drake Taylor Whalen

Drake Taylor Whalen, 26, of Charlotte, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

He was born on December 22, 1999, in Gastonia, North Carolina, to David and Kimberly Vogel Whalen. A graduate of Stuart W. Cramer High School in Cramerton, Drake pursued his passion for automotive mechanics, later graduating from the NASCAR Institute in Mooresville.

Throughout his career, he showed remarkable dedication and skill as he worked at Infiniti of Charlotte, where he was nearing the designation of master mechanic. He was an avid car enthusiast and loved working on them.

In his earlier years, Drake explored a variety of interests. He enjoyed ice hockey, skateboarding the streets, and was a Lego master.

Drake was known for his unwavering love of family and friends. He built lasting relationships throughout his life and was particularly close to his brother and sister. With an infectious smile and a warm heart, he brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was a very active and committed young man, who you could find either playing video games or going to the gym.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Donald Whalen; and maternal grandmother, Barbara Mae Trofast.

In addition to his parents, David and Kimberly, he is survived by his brother, Devin Whalen; sister-in-law, Madi Whalen; sister, McKenna Whalen; paternal grandmother, Ok-Boon Groenveld, her husband, John; step grandfather, and his beloved nephew, Eadric Whalen.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 2 from 9:30-11:00 AM with a service following at 11:00 AM at the Chapel of Benson Funeral & Cremation. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mt. Holly.
