Curtis Thompson, Jr.

March 9, 1962 — January 3, 2021

Curtis Erwin Thompson, Jr. of Charlotte, NC passed away on January 3, 2021 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center after complications from a heart attack one month prior.

Curty was born in Charlotte, NC on March 9, 1962 to Curtis Erwin Thompson, Sr. and Melva Greene Thompson. He is survived by his four children; Taylor Thompson (wife Christi), Anna Thompson Garner (husband John), Patricia Thompson, and Ada Thompson Horn (husband Clayton). Curty thought the world of his first granddaughter, Terra Garner, and was excitedly expecting his second grandchild in June 2021. He is also survived by his mother and four sisters; Pam Crosby (husband Marty), Cindy Thompson, Natalie Shepherd (husband Charlie) and Kim Thompson.

Curty was a 1980 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, where he excelled as captain of the wrestling and football team. From a young age, he took pride in learning the family trade of furniture repair and refinishing from his late grandfather, Paul Thompson, Sr., father, Curtis Thompson, Sr, his uncles and community at the shop. The Thompson’s collectively served the greater Charlotte area for three generations, where they valued their customers and appreciated the craftsmanship as well as the heritage behind the family business. Throughout the years, Curty enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. Many would tell old stories of him barefoot waterskiing on Lake Norman or driving around Coulwood Hills in his ‘69 Cougar, blaring the best of classic rock. One would often find Curty at his regular breakfast spot, the Shuffletown Grill, or tinkering with his latest treasure often taking the form of an old vehicle or piece of furniture that only he could see potential in. Some things he loved were the occasional camping trip with his family or any opportunity to come to the rescue when his childrens’ car broke down on the side of the road. All who knew Curty will miss his squinty-eyed smile and light-hearted approach to life.

A socially-distanced graveside memorial service, open to only siblings and children of Curty, will be held at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 10th at 2:30 PM. Under the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19 Pandemic, we regret not being able to host a formal service open to the public. Please feel free to join a virtual live stream of the memorial service at the Zoom link below on Sunday, January 10th at 2:30 PM or watch the recording at any time on the link below available after the service.
